Kaleida Health + Buffalo Purchasing Initiative

The mission of the BPI is to create a convening resource for Buffalo’s large employers to explore strategies and share resources to expand purchasing opportunities for local businesses owned by people of color.

Kaleida Health is the largest healthcare provider in Western New York, serving the area’s eight counties with state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive healthcare services. Its expert, compassionate healthcare professionals are committed to providing the best possible outcomes and experience for patients and visitors. More than one million sick or injured patients choose a Kaleida Health facility annually, including Bradford Regional Medical Center, Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, DeGraff Medical Park, John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, and Olean General Hospital. Accredited by DNV Healthcare, Kaleida Health also provides important services through two long-term care facilities, nearly 80 outpatient clinics, including school-based health centers, and home health care through the Visiting Nursing Association of WNY, Inc. In addition, Kaleida Health’s hospitals support residency training programs of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, training more than 700 residents each year.

Kaleida Health is a member of the Premier Group Purchasing Organization, with access to the Premier Supplier Diversity Program. We also negotiate local contracts which go through an RFP process or obtain three competitive bids on every request with one quote coming from a Diversity Vendor.

Construction Management

When Kaleida Health performs work with established minority hiring goals such as with state grants or federally guaranteed loans, we follow those established target goals through our contract with the construction management group hired to perform the work. They reach out to firms using state lists for minority firms with current certification. On larger projects we have worked with different CM groups to assist in community outreach and have worked in some cases to “right-size” scopes of work to attract smaller firms. For example, when building a 12-story building, a small minority painting firm may not be able to take on the entire project but could do one floor. This approach has been successful in the past.
